Queertopia Summed Up and Vast Gratitude:

Queertopia has ended, and I still have some residual excitement, so I may as well write about it!

Queertopia, or ‘This Little Gay of Mine’ was the first summer show I’ve been in since Junior high; subsequently I feel profoundly blessed to be a part of it! Unlike my Junior High experiences, which was awful at best, Queertopia was absolute fun!

I’ve loved my time at SPCPA and being part of this show with other SPCPA performers was a perfect bit of closure. Yet, I am honored mostly to be part of something outside of school. It’s endearing to find out that you’re chosen to be part of something, when they don’t need to choose you!

I love SPCPA, but the way they cast shows is flawed. You’re bound to get into something, so as wonderful as it felt to get into shows, you knew you’d definitely get in to one show or another.

With Queertopia, Joey could have chosen any array of young performers to ask, and he chose to ask us! I’m so glad to have been chosen alongside such talented people!

Not only that, but I felt like we were doing something meaningful: theatre for social change, as opposed to mere entertainment. It was schmaltzy and glittering but as a whole it proved the strength and heart of the Gay community.

That couldn’t be any more different than my previous summer shows, where homophobic slurs were used thoughtlessly, and the overall feel of what we did was pandering and sickly-sweet.

I mentioned to a few of my friends that I wish we could’ve had an after party, since the only shows I ever got to formally celebrate were the Junior High ones not worth my time. Though a Queertopia after-party never panned out, I know that there was love shared among our cast, and I’ll never forget this phenomenal opportunity!

I feel so blessed to have been part of something so wonderful and to have met and collaborated with such fantastic people! This was the best PRIDE ever!
