As I said in the second of my makeup papers, I have always wanted to see how the music of my triumvirate of alternative musicians is translated, and this dance is by far the most creative and surprising! Aurelio Voltaire Hernandez’s music is very broad in genres, though always considered alternative. I found this video of a woman clogging to one of his songs. ‘Almost Human’ is dotted with biblical references and ideologically radical statements, and similar to most of his songs, has a hint of his background in Hispanic music.
The best, most exciting part about finding this strange anachronistic combination, is the fact that Aurelio Voltaire Hernandez commented on it: “Great work! Thanks for choosing my song.” I think that is so interesting and magnificent that he supports amateur choreography of one of his songs, especially such a seemingly iconoclastic medium of dance, too.
I have never seen anyone clogging outside of vague clips of traditional dances. It seems so much more like tap than I previously believed clogging was; it incorporates high kicks and it has more to do with lifting the entire legs, than tap. I think this is a very strange but wonderful concept, though unlike all the other dances I’ve watched for papers, this doesn’t seem to be devoted to telling the story of the song. This is also shocking considering that this is seemingly the only dance choreographed to one of his songs on YouTube!
I’m, in fact, tempted to make my own dance to one of his songs, actually related to the story of the song, since I find his music so danceable anyways!
For my hypothetical dance to one of his songs, I would be sure to choose an up-tempo since he has so many. I have actually wanted to for a while now, but I’ve been stopped often, since I think a partner dance to one of his songs would be so fun! The best for that would be ‘The Night’ I believe since it has the two best aspects of his music: the ethnic flavor (this with a Hispanic sound) and the happy celebration of macabre things! I am seriously considering this choreography idea, given I have time someday and a partner to dance with…
Subsequently, although it certainly isn’t the best dance I’ve seen it is utterly amazing as technique is concerned. She makes these elaborate steps seem so easy in how she embodies them. She also seems to be having fun, incorporating her personality into it! It really is lovely! She even has a Goth-looking clogging costume, which is such an odd yet interesting combination!
